The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe Anime Film R15+ Version Drops New Trailer – Hey there anime fans, a new trailer has been released for the R15+ version of The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe, also known as Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo in Japan. This updated version, called Shinsei-ban (meaning genuine edition), is set to hit theatres in Japan on October 4, 2024.

The film is being re-released with 327 scenes retaken from the original version, focusing on enhancing the horror elements that the creators had originally envisioned.

Focus on Kitaro’s Fathers

The trailer highlights two key characters in the story, Kitaro’s father, Medama Oyaji, and Mizuki, a character inspired by the creator of the original GeGeGe no Kitaro manga, Shigeru Mizuki. The trailer, titled Kitaro’s Fathers: The Bond Act, gives fans a closer look at the emotional connection between these two protagonists, adding more depth to the storyline.

Original Film’s Success and Storyline

The original version of The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe was released in Japan on November 17, 2023, with a PG12 rating. It commemorated the 100th birthday of Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of the original GeGeGe no Kitaro manga.

The movie ran for 104 minutes and was a hit at the box office, earning 2.79 billion yen (about USD 19.15 million) with 1.95 million viewers in Japan.

Set in 1956, the story follows Mizuki, who arrives in Nagura Village under mysterious circumstances. The village is secretly controlled by the powerful Ryuga family, and Mizuki is there on a secret mission while pretending to mourn the death of the family head.

At the same time, Kitaro’s father is also in the village searching for his missing wife. However, a family member is mysteriously killed, sparking a series of supernatural events.

R15+ Rating and What It Means?

The R15+ version of the movie aims to deliver the horror that was originally intended by the creators, although no new scenes will be added, and the film’s length will remain the same.

According to Japan’s Film Classification and Rating Organization, an R15+ rating means the film contains content that is intense or mature, making it unsuitable for viewers under the age of 15. The film will therefore only be available to those aged 15 and older.
