The anime is based on Kimama Aoboshi’s popular fantasy manga, which was serialized in Monthly Comic Ryu from July 2010 to February 2022, and collected in 15 volumes. According to the publisher, the series has sold over 1.75 million copies.
Storyline Overview
The story centres around Hotaru Yuyami, a picture book author who is grieving the loss of his beloved dog, Hanako. One day, Hotaru discovers a strange pink mushroom growing in his garden. To his surprise, the mushroom comes to life, resembling a dog. Despite his initial doubts, Hotaru welcomes the creature, naming it “Kinoko Inu” (Mushroom Dog).
Life with Kinoko Inu is full of chaos, from eating Hotaru’s food to causing mischief, but the dog’s playful nature helps Hotaru slowly heal from his sadness. Along with his childhood friend Komako, his editor, and a researcher named Yara, Hotaru’s world begins to brighten in this heartwarming, slightly mysterious anime.
