Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle and The First Slam Dunk Reclaim Top 10 Spots with Revival Screenings – Hey anime fans, Remember those cool anime movies you watched a while back?

Well, they’re making a comeback. In mid-August 2024, two fan-favorite anime films, ‘Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle’ and ‘The First Slam Dunk,’ jumped back into Japan’s top 10 movie list. How? They held special screenings that got fans excited all over again.

“Haikyu!!” Spikes Its Way Back

“Haikyu!!” hosted a big event called The Dumpster Battle Last Match in Tokyo. They showed the movie and had the voice actors come on stage to talk about it. This wasn’t just in Tokyo though, they streamed it to theaters all over Japan. Thanks to this, the movie shot up to 6th place at the box office.

Since it first came out in February 2024, Haikyu!! has made a whopping 11.5 billion yen (that’s about 78 million US dollars). It’s now one of the top 35 highest-earning movies ever shown in Japan.

“Slam Dunk” Scores Again

The First Slam Dunk also got back in the game. It started showing again in over 380 theatres across Japan on August 13. This basketball anime movie first came out way back in December 2022, but people still love it. It’s now earned 16.2 billion yen (about 110 million US dollars), making it the 12th highest grossing movie in Japan ever.

What Else Is Hot?

While these old favourites are making a comeback, new movies are still crushing it:

  • The new “Crayon Shin-chan” movie is holding strong in second place.
  • “My Hero Academia: You’re Next” is right behind in third.
  • The fourth live-action “Kingdom” movie is still going strong, now up to 6.8 billion yen.
