Top 10 New Rom Com Anime of 2024 – No matter the season, romance will always be that one genre that won’t go missing in a long list of new animes. And for that, we listed down the top 10 new rom com anime of 2024. So, let’s get started.

10. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies

Falling in love is easy, but falling in love with your enemy sure does throw a wrench into your plans for world domination. Supervillain Mira leads an evil organization trying to take over and destroy everything. Earth’s under attack, but a magical girl named Byakuya Mimori stands up to Mira’s group.

As they face off, something unexpected happens: Mira falls in love with Mimori. Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies gives a very heartwarming description of the interactions between Mira and Byakuya.

Of course, the characters themselves have a very strong and likable identity, not to mention the author does a good job of balancing the side characters so they add to the plot without overdoing their interference in the main romance. While there isn’t much actual plot, the story is extremely satisfying and heartwarming, which makes this a great relaxant from all the other high-intensity anime out there.

9. Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp

Who knew you could get reincarnated other than being hit by a truck? Being reborn as your past self with a second chance isn’t all sunshine and roses, especially when your past was a notorious villainess. Once a villainous noblewoman, Dr. Aoi Takamoto gets a shocking second chance at life.

Reborn as herself, a brilliant surgeon, she uses her past mistakes to become a healer but has only six months to prove she deserves this new path. Doctor Elise is one of the more original isekai, or should I say reverse isekai, in recent years. Speaking of manhwa, Doctor Elise is part of a great trend of manhwa adaptations.

It seems surreal to be getting this many lately, and I love the diversity that they bring to the medium. Out of all the isekai that tend to be highly repetitive, superficial, sexualized women, and lack emotional momentum, this one is the most meaningful for me.

8. Studio Apartment, Good Lighting, Angel Included

new rom com anime

Living in an apartment alone was supposed to be simple, not until a celestial roommate with a halo crash-landed on the balcony. High schooler Shintarou’s ordinary life gets a heavenly twist when he finds Towa, an angel, on his balcony. She needs to learn about humans, so Shintarou lets her stay.

Living together in a cramped apartment with a secret angel is both hilarious and challenging, especially with other girls in the mix. Definitely a lovely blend of fan service and cuteness in just the right amounts, all packaged up by a visual treat.

The character design is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, especially every time they get shiny and blushing; it’s adorable, to say the least. Probably the biggest surprise of this anime is how well the voice casting and voice acting are. The lines delivered by all have a strong sense of emotion behind them, and the voice of the female main character, in particular, is perfect.

7. Days with My Stepsister

Does living with the school’s top beauty under one roof guarantee a fairy tale romance? Not quite. Yuuta’s dad remarries, bringing in the stunning Saki as his stepsister. Both scarred from past relationships, they vow to keep a distance.

Yet, as they learn to live together, their initial awkwardness blossoms into a comfortable friendship, hinting at a potential future romance. A cup of pure and clean water with a spoonful of honey would be how I describe the book in one essence.

The series did not force overly romantic and cute scenes like other light novels, which focused heavily on fluff. Character development is a thing here, and it takes time. I like that the author did not rush things as it surely takes time for two strangers to develop feelings between them.

6. Astro Note

new rom com anime

How do you turn a burnt career as a chef into a recipe for royalty? Fresh graduate Takumi finds a job and a place to live at a charming boarding house run by the beautiful Mira. Their connection grows, but there’s a twist: Mira is a princess in disguise searching for a mysterious key to return home.

Takumi helps her keep this secret while they search together. Definitely a hidden gem for the season. A lot of Japanese comedy doesn’t work for me, but this show manages to be silly without going too over the top.

Often in rom-com anime, secondary characters are there to hype up or dip at the main relationship through a flare for the situational without much characterization. But the cast of eccentrics living at the Astro-sou Boarding House party feels unique and entertaining as veritable characters in their own right.

5. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction

Not everyone gets to experience that one dream you wouldn’t even tell other people about. This otaku president finds his real-life dream girl, but she only wants to cosplay as his favorite 2D character. Die-hard 2D otaku club president hates real girls until a cosplaying girl Ririsa joins the club. Well, I guess everything does have an exception.

To make things more intense, she convinces him to take photos of her in revealing cosplays, blurring the line between fantasy and reality. I initially thought this would be a mere copy of My Dress-Up Darling, but it managed to stand on its own despite the niche genre.

If you’re a fan of My Dress-Up Darling, you’ll likely enjoy this as well. It doesn’t feel repetitive because it leaves a strong impression with its originality. The art is top-notch with a clear ecchi style that might appeal to some viewers.

4. Mission: Yozakura Family

new rom com anime

Do you want to survive high school? Then try marrying the head of a spy family. After his family’s death, Taiyou finds solace in his friend Mutsumi, heir to the powerful spy clan. But her overprotective brother sees Taiyou as a threat and forces him to marry Mutsumi.

Now a reluctant spy, Taiyou must hone his skills to protect his wife and unravel the secrets of his past in the Yozakura family. A lively antic through the world of marriage where danger lurks around and laughter is the best defense.

But fear not, for what follows is a delightful blend of slapstick comedy and heartwarming romance, with the colorful cast of characters adding to the chaos. From bumbling spies to unexpected allies, each member of the group brings their own unique flair to the table. And let’s not forget about the romance.

3. The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil

Sometimes the only way to win a war is to recruit your enemy, especially when your enemy is the cutest angel in school. Demons are losing the war to angels, so they send a disguised Akutsu to Earth to recruit a leader. His target is a beautiful transfer student, Lily, who unbeknownst to him is actually the enemy angel.

On the surface, Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil seems like it might be just another generic rom-com. After all, it’s obviously based on the centuries-old template of Romeo and Juliet with the forbidden love of enemies. Comedy is top-notch; think Cromartie High School with the mix of competitiveness between the main leads, like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.

The fight scenes are much better than any rom-com has any business being. As for the adaptation aspect, the studio did an amazing job bringing the manga to life. The jokes were translated so much better from the manga than I thought they would be.

2. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!

animesoulking

Are Hokkaido gals really as cute as everyone says? City boy Tsubasa’s dream Hokkaido winter turns harsh with the bitter cold. A chatty local girl, Minami, dressed for summer in the freezing weather shows him the ropes and warms him up to the island’s charms, including their adorable Hokkaido girls.

This is a rom-com that doesn’t take too many risks and settles for delivering a useful experience. But fear not, every character is very well written. Not to mention it has a perfect balance of wholesomeness that isn’t overwhelming like a lot of anime.

It’s great that the main character isn’t totally an extremely unrealistic guy like other romance anime. On top of that, all of the girls are very different yet likable and unique in their own way. Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable is a show that’s exactly what it tries to be.

1. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian

new rom com anime

Love gets lost in translation from this ice queen beauty. Ice queen Alisa, the school idol, hides her crush on a nerdy classmate, Masachika. She secretly praises him in Russian, unaware he understands and plays dumb, leading to a funny and secretly sweet dynamic. Definitely better than any other rom-com, as the main character is capable and smart.

You don’t feel a huge imbalance compared to other series. On top of that, the teasing gimmick is pretty fun, and the side characters are enjoyable. Even though there are some cliches, it turns out to be the wholesome type rather than the cringe one.

Overall, this anime is a well-written, engaging series that deals with important themes in a thoughtful and sensitive way. The plot is well crafted and wholesome, and the characters are well-developed and not rushed, which makes it the best new rom-com anime of 2024.
